Napoli, the defending Serie A champions, will open the 2023–24 season away at newly promoted Frosinone on Saturday. Their first guests last season surged to the title, breaking their 33-year title drought while the hosts are back in Italy’s top flight for the third time in a decade.
Last season, a sparkling Napoli side secured first place in Serie A with five games to spare, bringing comfort and delight to the one-club city of Naples for the first time since 1990. Stars like Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen—who was named Capocannoniere after scoring 26 goals in Serie A—were rewarded for their outstanding play even though their team’s hot start cooled off in the spring of the 2022–23 season, leaving Lazio in second place and the rest of Calcio’s heavy hitters in their wake.
Luciano Spalletti, Napoli’s beloved coach, is poised to end his sabbatical early to take over as Italy’s manager after the club’s great season, during which they also lost in the Champions League quarter finals to Milan. Rudi Garcia, another ex-Roma boss, was seen as a disappointing replacement, but the Partenopei had a strong preseason, so they might be able to mount a respectable defense of their title.
Scudetto holders Napoli will visit Serie B champions Frosinone with some apprehension, since Frosinone has lost all four of their previous top-flight matches against Napoli while allowing 15 goals. The Ciociari, who are making a third attempt at the big leagues in a decade, have lost both of their previous season openers, at home to Torino in 2015 and away to Atalanta in 2017.
Frosinone finished seven points ahead of second-place Genoa to earn promotion last season, but the club was dealt a blow when 2006 World Cup hero Fabio Grosso announced his retirement soon after the promotion was secured. Eusebio Di Francesco, formerly of Roma and Cagliari, is the new coach of the Gialloblu. His reign officially began with a win in the first round of the Coppa Italia last week, capping off an undefeated preseason.
