Relegation is a common fate for teams in Serie A, especially those that have just been promoted from Serie B and those that suffered the season before. This season, Frosinone, Lecce, and Verona are the odds-on favorites to be relegated.

Both Juventus and AC Milan, two other traditional Italian soccer powerhouse, were demoted after being implicated in the 2006 Calciopoli incident. In 1980, Milan was relegated after a match-fixing scandal.

Lecce avoided relegation last season, which they surely would consider a success, but the Salentini were one of the league’s lowest goal scorers and may have a similarly difficult time this year. After being let go as Sampdoria’s head coach in January, Roberto D’Aversa has been brought in to take over.

When last seen competing in Serie A, Genoa almost finished dead last, as they have for the better part of a decade. They had only 28 points that season, good for 19th-worst in the league. That season was their worst in the last decade, and they were unable to avoid relegation.
