Brazilian events are back on the schedule after the COVID-19 pandemic, and Rodolfo Vieira and Armen Petrosyan’s middleweight clash is headlining this Saturday’s show in Sao Paulo. Both fighters bring formidable grappling abilities to this contest; so, this matchup certainly promises an interesting battle.
Vieira has established himself as one of the premier submission specialists in his division, finishing eight opponents through Brazilian jiu-jitsu submission. However, in his last outing Christian Leroy Duncan proved a worthy opponent who challenged Vieira across all MMA skill sets, especially ground game development and cardio capacity. Though his cardio has improved considerably over time, Vieira may struggle in this particular battleground matchup.
Petrosyan is an accomplished striker, capable of ending fights when necessary. He averages 3.36 significant strikes per minute and boasts an impressive takedown defense, stopping 87% of opponents’ attempts at taking him down. Furthermore, his Muay Thai and kickboxing backgrounds give him a tremendous edge.
Petrosyan, 34 years old and an experienced veteran in mixed martial arts (MMA), boasts an impressive 9-2 record with six TKO/KO victories to his credit. While he has found success competing at middleweight level, he has yet to face true elite talent within this division. His best fights have come against harder opponents; yet has yet to meet with an opponent of similar talent as himself.
While he may be an effective striker, Brundage doesn’t possess the power punching prowess necessary to land single shots like Brundage did. Instead, his effectiveness lies in using his jiu-jitsu to gain entry and work from top position.
Vieira’s jiu-jitsu may outmatch that of Petrosyan, yet his wrestling is much more advanced. Petrosyan is a veteran MMA fighter from Armenia who holds two Italian championship titles and European crowns and also boasts kickboxing experience; this fight may prove his biggest test to date and may lead to early trouble for him.
Vieira would gain momentum against Petrosyan with a victory, potentially rising to within the top 15 of middleweight rankings. A performance bonus could prove decisive. He must remain more efficient during the first half and avoid big shots.
