In the event of UFC 292, Aljamain Sterling defends his bantamweight title against Sean O’Malley. Sterling is facing a rising star in O’Malley for the fourth time as he defends his bantamweight title. Since being the series’ breakthrough star in season one of Dana White’s Contender Series, 28-year-old O’Malley has believed he is destined to battle for championship gold.
After a split decision victory over Henry Cejudo in May, Aljamain Sterling successfully defended his UFC bantamweight title for the third time in a row. Even though “Funk Master” Sterling has won his last nine fights, he still gets criticized.
Despite winning by split decision in their rematch, he still felt the lingering effects of his disputed disqualification victory in their first meeting. His victories over T.J. Dillashaw, who was already hurt, and Cejudo, who hadn’t fought in three years, haven’t earned him much love from fans, either.
Sterling is a top-tier grappler who has been recognized as an All-American at the NCAA Division III level. But he’s also gotten better as a striker, as he kicks a lot and switches stances frequently.
After defeating Petr Yan by split decision in October, “Suga” Sean O’Malley rose to the position of second-ranked bantamweight contender. As soon as he entered the UFC, O’Malley was heralded as a potential star, but his hype train was halted when, in 2020, he lost to Marlon Vera due to a freak leg injury sustained in the first round.
Despite the low quality of many of his subsequent opponents, Suga has won four straight bouts since that loss and silenced his critics by defeating the former champion, Yan.
Using a wide variety of techniques, O’Malley lands 7.43 meaningful strikes per minute as a bantamweight. The 28-year-old has won a Performance of the Night bonus in seven of his previous eight fights, demonstrating that he is more than just a showman in the ring.
