Prediction and Analysis: Nicolau vs Perez April 27, 2024

Game Preview

Matheus Nicolau vs Alex Perez Fight Preview

On Saturday, the UFC will make a big return to the UFC Apex facility within Las Vegas with a major main event in the men’s flyweight class between fifth-ranked contender Matheus Nicolau and eighth-ranked contender Alex Perez. Continue reading this article to find the most in depth martial arts analysis about this coming fight.

Alex Perez Analysis: On a three-fight losing skid

In his place, Alex Perez (24-8) looks to win for the first time in almost four years. That TKO victory against Jussier Formiga (2020) was outstanding. But Deiveson Figueiredo (2020) and Alexandre Pantoja (2022), who both went on to take the title, then submitted him. Before making a comeback against Muhammad Mokaev (2024), he waited a few more years. Mokaev handed him his third consecutive defeat by unanimous decision. Perez comes from a wrestling background, which typically results in stronger cardio, but he only witnessed a single bout reach the championship rounds (a regional title contest he won in 2015). Although it’s concerning that he took this battle so quickly, it was applauded that he was able to survive a fast-paced, 15-minute fight in early March without taking any harm. Perez may have won if he had thrown his hands a little bit more in the third round, but it was a good tune-up.

Matheus Nicolau Analysis: Coming off a loss

In some way, Matheus Nicolau (19-3-1) leads a card after suffering a crushing defeat. At the UFC on ESPN 44 last year, he swallowed a precisely timed knee from Brandon Royval. That decisively ended his winning run of six fights and stopped his momentum. He wanted to bounce back by defeating Manel Kape, who regrettably broke his ribs, in their rematch. Nicolau is very at ease in the role of the matador, counter-striking and angling himself to avoid Perez’s pressure with his footwork, quickness, and agility. His technique is more successful, though, when he threatens to take down opponents (1.4 attempts per round, 45% success rate in the UFC). Stay tuned for more articles with more UFC analysis.
