Oliveira Analysis: Wrestling could be an issue for him
In order to regain his lightweight title, Charles Oliveira (34-9(1)) must defeat one of the division’s top prospects. He put together perhaps the best run we have ever witnessed in the lightweight class, winning 11 excellent fights, 3 of which were knockouts and 7 of which were submissions. After defeating Michael Chandler (2021) to win the vacant title, he went on to submit Dustin Poirier (2021) and Justin Gaethje (2022). But with his own acquiescence, Islam Makhachev (2022) brutally overthrew him. When he came back in June of last year, seven months later, he defeated Beneil Dariush at UFC 289 to resume his winning ways. Another intriguing issue is wrestling. Tsarukyan is an excellent wrestler and could easily overcome Oliveira with some effort. Should that occur, Oliveira ought to intentionally threaten submissions and utilize those threats as leverage to either stand or sweep.
Tsarukyan Analysis: He’s only lost twice
Arman Tsarukyan (21-2) is obstructing him with the intention of winning a title of his own. Following his debut defeat against Makhachev (2019) via unanimous decision, he embarked on a 5-fight winning streak. Mateusz Gamrot (2022) stopped the momentum with a unanimous decision, but he has since gained some traction by defeating Damir Ismagulov (2022) and eliminating Joaquim Silva and Dariush in the previous round. In the past six years, Makhachev is the only person to have defeated Oliveira. Therefore, it makes natural that Tsarukyan would pay close attention to the fight and try to emulate Makhachev’s achievements, especially considering that he and the champion possess a number of similar skills.
