Game Preview

Chris Paul’s best version returned just in time for the Phoenix Suns to retake the lead (3-2) in their first round series against the New Orleans Pelicans. Paul finished Game 5 with 22 points, 11 assists, six rebounds, and three steals.

Forward Mikal Bridges came up big with 31 points, while Deandre Ayton added 19. Both missed only five shots. The crazy part is that Bridges is better known for his defensive skills.

As for the Pelicans, nothing changed. Brandon Ingram led the way with 22 points. He was followed by CJ McCollum with 21 and Jonas Valanciunas with 17. The big fella also added 14 rebounds.

The game ended 112-97, meaning the Suns had no trouble covering the spread (6½). The total went under as it was set at 214½ points.

Now, the series returns to New Orleans, where the Pelicans own a 21-23 record. Ingram will play despite dealing with a minor injury on his right hand. Even so, the Pelicans come in as the NBA betting underdogs at +110.

New Orleans is 2-6 Straight Up in their last eight games when playing as the underdog. However, it seems like they really like to play on Thursdays because they’re 8-2 SU in their last 10 games played on a Thursday.

Also, let’s not forget that the Pelicans already won two elimination games in the play-in tournament (San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Clippers).

Regarding the Suns, there’s a small chance for Booker to return. If he does, his minutes will be limited.

“What he brings to the basketball court is just amazing. Knowing he’s close is great, but at the same time we have a job to do and we have to take care of business no matter what,” teammate Jae Crowder said.

Last but not least, it seems like Phoenix also likes to play on Thursdays. The Suns are 5-1 against the spread in their last six games played on a Thursday. In other words, expect an epic battle!
