Fight Preview
George Kambosos Jr is looking to rebound from back-to-back losses and take another shot at world title glory with a victory against Maxi Hughes this Saturday July 22, in an IBF world title eliminator.
Kambosos sent shockwaves through boxing when he defeated Teofimo Lopez to become an undisputed lightweight champion in 2021. Since then, the Australian went on to defend his belts on multiple occasions at stadium events; however, since losing twice to Devin Haney he now finds himself fighting to return into the top-10 rankings of his division.
Kambosos’ fight on Saturday marks just the latest of many that have led him here, despite recent setbacks and injury problems. Still, he believes he’s in his best form ever as he prepares to defend his IBF world title eliminator status against Hughes’ left hand power.
Kambosos may be the favorite in his fight with Hughes, but in order to return to the top-10 he must bring his A game. Hughes boasts a professional record of 26-5-2 with five knockouts and has competed 231 rounds throughout his career.
Both fighters are hoping to end the summer on an impressive note. Hughes, 33, won his last fight against former featherweight champion Kid Galahad by majority decision and also defeated Ryan Walsh and Jono Carroll during his current seven-fight win streak. Hughes is an experienced southpaw who will surely present Kambosos with an immense challenge in this fight.
Kambosos should return to the top-10 rankings of WBA, IBF, and RING following this fight irrespective of its outcome. Although he’s been linked with taking on Gervonta Davis – heavyweight world champion at this time – Kambosos has stated his desire for lower-tier fights first before engaging him directly.
This is Hughes’ prize for his current string of successes, but he now ventures outside of his familiar surroundings by traveling to the United States.
