Fight Preview
Naoya Inoue and Stephen Fulton will face off for the super bantamweight title at WBO Super Bang Weight Division 3. Much was made about their distinct styles when leading up to this matchup, such as Fulton being more of a boxer who relies on footwork and technical ability before striking, while Inoue stands out by being an aggressive striker who doesn’t hesitate to go directly at his opponent with his power shots or go for the body shots.
Inoue will be stepping up in class to compete for Fulton’s 122-pound belts in this contest. Fulton, a native of Philadelphia, is accustomed to traveling. He hasn’t fought in his actual hometown since 2015. But this battle will be his first outing outside of the United States.
Fulton remains in an uphill struggle against Inoue despite their similarities in style, power and one-shot knockout capability. Although his chin has held up well against punchers such as Brandon Figueroa, Arnold Khegai and Isaac Avelar, Inoue will test that defense to its limits.
Inoue recently made headlines when he relinquished four of his bantamweight titles to move up in weight for this exciting challenge, and is clearly excited for this major test.
Fulton will have been out of action for an extended period, raising questions over his fitness in this fight; nevertheless, the unbeaten American is an outstanding boxer and should present Inoue with an immense challenge. Fulton must avoid taking too many shots early on before trying to establish himself by cutting off the ring and wearing down Inoue’s energy; Inoue however is known for being an exceptional offensive fighter and should find openings in Fulton’s defense that allow him to pick him off over 12 rounds.
Although Naoya Inoue’s place in boxing history has already been assured, he will have the opportunity to add to it when he competes against Stephen Fulton for the super-bantamweight title.
