Preview & Picks: Ramirez vs Shimizu 7/25/2023

Game Preview

Fight Preview

Robeisy Ramirez will take on Satoshi Shimizu in a WBO featherweight title fight at Ariake Arena in Koto-Ku, Tokyo on Tuesday July 25. This will serve as the co-feature to Philadelphian WBC/WBO junior featherweight champ Stephen Fulton facing Japan’s Naoya “Monster” Inoue who are dueling for world titles at 145 pounds each.

Robeisy, commonly referred to by his nickname of ‘El Tren,’ will make the inaugural defense of his newly won WBO featherweight title against Japanese contender Satoshi Shimizu in Japan. In April of last year, Robeisy defeated previous super bantamweight champ Isaac Dogboe in a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision to claim the WBO 126-pound title. Robeisy’s victory over an opponent whose only previous career losses occurred in arduous contests versus Emanuel Navarrete proved straightforward.

Shimizu, such as Ramirez, has high-level amateur expertise, and while he hasn’t achieved the same level of achievement as the Cuban who has 2 Olympic gold medals, he did secure bronze at the London 2012 Olympics and challenged at the Beijing 2008 Games, in which he was disappointed by a loss to Yakup Kilic in the initial round.

Since turning pro he has amassed 12 victories against only one loss, which was against Joe Noynay in 2022. His most recent contest, in which he defeated Landy Cris Leon in the second round by RTD, took place 7 months and 12 days ago.

Ramirez won five of his initial seven professional fights by way of early knockouts, most notably against Fernando De Anda, Yeuri Andujar, and Brandon Valdes.

Shimizu appears to present the Cuban with the perfect challenge: He stands taller and has more reach than Ramirez while possessing considerable right hand power.

Ramirez must use his height and reach to keep Shimizu away, while avoiding his lethal straight left punches. If successful in doing this, then it should be easy for him to retain his WBO featherweight title; otherwise it could become very close.
