Fight Preview
Ryan Garcia and Oscar Duarte meet Saturday night as the main event of a DAZN card. For Garcia, this will be his first fight since being stopped by Gervonta Davis back in April; that loss broke his reputation as one of boxing’s unbreakable fighters and now Garcia seeks to reestablish himself within the junior welterweight division.
The 12-round fight will feature 25-year-old Garcia, a former world champion at super featherweight and lightweight divisions with a 23-1 record including 19 knockouts.
Garcia has shown promise since losing to Davis, performing well in both of his recent fights. His quick hands and powerful left hook have floored opponents. Garcia has also been working closely with ESPN Trainer of the Year Derrick James in order to sharpen other aspects of his game.
Garcia is the clear favorite in this fight, possessing superior skills that outclass Duarte by an impressive margin. Not only can he use quick hands, but his jab should cause confusion for Duarte as well as use his height and reach advantage to take down Duarte easily.
Duarte, on the other hand, is an experienced heavy hitter with an unimpressive resume. Although only fighting twice this year and winning both bouts by stoppage wins, Duarte could suffer serious damage if caught with an aggressive strike to either head or body. His only real weakness may be exposed by big shots aimed at his chin if caught.
Oscar Duarte is 26-1-1 with 21 stoppage victories under his belt. Adrian Estrella was the opponent of his lone defeat in 2019 via split decision. In his third bout since the beginning of his career in 2013, he was drawn. Ryan Garica needs to be mindful of some things that Duarte possesses, as demonstrated by his most impressive victory over Alex Martin.
Duarte can have an edge against Garcia if he can avoid hard punches and use his jabs effectively to keep her off balance, without resorting to trading punches with her. By controlling his aggression and capitalizing on speed, Duarte may even surprise and win by close decision.
