Saturday, July 28 will feature the showdown between veteran bantamweights Nonito Donaire (former four-division world champ) and Alexandro Santiago. Donaire (at 40 years old) has been active of late, competing for major titles in each of his past 11 fights while Santiago (at 27 years old) remains at an early stage in his professional development journey.
There isn’t much more that needs to be mentioned regarding Nonito Donaire. Donaire is one of the greatest boxers to have ever worn gloves in the lower weight categories. He has a record of 42-7 with 28 knockouts and is attempting to win the world bantamweight title for the 4th occasion in his professional career. It all began when Donaire, a Filipino, took over the amateur scene in the United States. He then experienced early career setbacks, which prompted him to regroup and accumulated 30 straight victories. At the age of 40, this is going to be his twelfth consecutive title battle.
Santiago is a Mexican fighter from Tijuana. His record is 27-3-5 with 14 knockouts. The 5 draws versus the sole undefeated opponents he faced at that point in his career are highly intriguing, and people are left wondering what circumstances contributed to those results. The Mexican orthodox fighter is 5’2″ tall and has a 65.5″ reach. Even within the bantamweight class, this is a relatively small physique. The ability of Santiago to land on the interior of Donaire will be fascinating to watch.
Though they have vastly differing experiences, both fighters are extremely well-matched from a technical standpoint. Donaire is an outstanding counterpuncher with one of the highest fight IQs in his division; he’s fast and powerful with a left hook; Santiago excels at frustrating opponents with excellent footwork and head movement while being an adept counterpuncher who can land big shots using his jab.
Donaire and Santiago both possess impressive skill sets, making them two of the top contenders in their respective divisions. It will be interesting to witness which fighter can capitalize on his or her strengths and exploit any weaknesses for victory on Saturday evening in Las Vegas.
