This Saturday’s super lightweight bout features Jovanie Santiago of Puerto Rico and former WBA Super Lightweight champion Mario Barrios of San Antonio, Texas. When Barrios last competed, he had stepped up in weight and lost to former welterweight champion Keith Thurman through a 12-round unanimous decision. The last time Santiago competed was in May 2021, when Gary Antuanne Russell stopped him after the sixth round.
The 33-year-old Santiago has boxed just 80 rounds since becoming pro in 2007, and he enters the ring with a 14-2-1 record and 10 knockouts. That’s a result of his 14 victories, 10 knockouts, and relative inactivity over the years. With a current knockout ratio of 58.8%, Santiago possesses lots of power in his fists and is 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 70-inch reach. He has, however, dropped his last two matches.

His two biggest victories came against Juan Zegarra and DeMarcus Corley, who he defeated for the vacant Universal Boxing Federation International Super Lightweight Title in 2017. A little over a year later, he added the vacant WBA Fedelatin belt by stopping Gustavo Vittori in the ninth round. In between, he also defeated Ivan Cano via a technical decision in the seventh round.
Barrios, who is 27 years old, enters the ring with a record of 26-2 and 17 knockouts. After finishing his amateur career, he went professional in 2013, and so far, he has fought for 154 rounds. He defeated Batyr Akhmedov by majority decision in September 2019 after knocking him out in the fourth and twelfth rounds to claim the vacant WBA Title Super Lightweight Crown. He subsequently defeated Ryan Karl in the sixth round of his first title defense before losing a fight against Gervonta Davis.
Prior to facing Davis, when he took a step up in class, Barrios hadn’t really faced many actual top contenders, but he handled himself well in that battle. He moved up to welterweight to take on Thurman, which was a bit of a gamble, but he fared well in that match as well. He has good speed and power, so if he wants to defeat Santiago, he will need to use a strong jab.
