Fight Preview
On Saturday night, all eyes will be focused on the WBO and IBF flyweight unification bout between undefeated American Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (18-0, 11 KO’s) and British challenger Sunny Edwards (20-0, 4 KO’s). Not only could one emerge victorious but they could establish themselves as one of the top contenders within their division pound-for-pound. This fight takes place at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona and can accommodate up to 20,000 fans.
Both Jesse and Sunny enter this bout undefeated, with American fighter Jesse Rodriguez entering as a heavy favorite against British opponent Sunny Edwards. This fight promises to be a tactical one with Rodriguez using power shots against Edwards who may attempt to outpoint his opponent with swift footwork and counterpunching techniques.
With a decision victory over Moruti Mthalane in March 2021, Edwards claimed the title. Edwards has been a reigning champion ever since taking home the championship, successfully defending it four times. Edwards defeated Andres Campos most recently in June.
Rodriguez made a comeback to flyweight this year, giving up his super flyweight title in the process, and he won the vacant WBO title by defeating Cristian Gonzalez Hernandez. Before Rodriguez could be ready to take on Edwards in a unification showdown, he had surgery and a layoff due to a fractured jaw he sustained during the Hernandez fight. Rodriguez is a pressure fighter with underrated footwork, solid fundamentals and considerable power. An all-round fighter who prefers fighting at range, but will probably need to close in if he hopes to defeat Edwards.
Sunny is a technical boxer with superior footwork, upper body movement and defense abilities. While he excels at fighting from range, his best performances come when he closes in to try outpoint opponents. Sunny’s notorious for being hard to pin down. A master counterpuncher and skilled jabber, Sunny also utilizes his speed and quick footwork to stay ahead of his opponents and frustrate them with crisp jabs. Furthermore, his quick footwork and defensive abilities will enable him to avoid Bam’s heavy hits.
