Fight Preview
Michael Conlan will meet Jordan Gill in a 12 round featherweight bout this Saturday night at SSE Arena Belfast. These former world title challengers collide in a fight that could prove pivotal in either player’s quest to clinch an opportunity at world title glory.
Conlan lost his world title fight against WBA featherweight champion Leigh Wood in May and since has had to regroup and find his way back up the rankings. Working alongside Cuban-American trainer Pedro Diaz in order to regain form more quickly. Conlan remains confident he will return stronger than ever and win one or more world titles before the year is out.
An upset win against Gill would provide him with the momentum needed to resume a world title fight challenge and would provide the Belfast native with an opportunity to demonstrate whether or not he is an emerging contender in his division.
Gill boasts an enviable 27-2-1 record that outshines that of Conlan in terms of wins per knockout. In comparison to Conlan who only has nine victories with one defeat under his belt. Gill recently defeated Reece Bellotti, former opponent Karim Guerfi and European featherweight champion Kiko Martinez during four consecutive wins in five bouts.
Though he lost to Lopez back in May, Briton Joey Gill still remains one of the most exciting fighters in his division and can make opponents uncomfortable like few others can. His style fits seamlessly into this sport and it will be fascinating to witness his performance against her on Saturday night.
Conlan clearly boasts the greater punching power, having won 50% of his fights through knockouts compared to Gill who only has 8 of his bouts ending with one or the other. While Gill does possess an adequate chin, after being taken down in two recent fights by Kiko Martinez and Karim Guerfi it’s difficult to predict his resilience against Conlan’s power.
