Terence Crawford faces Errol Spence Jr. in what could be one of the year’s best unification fights when they square off at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, July 28 for their unification bout, and promises to be one of its highlights. Spence is an expert technician with a high work rate while Crawford boasts outstanding footwork and Ring IQ; expect this event to become one of the costliest fights of the year when it takes place.
Both fighters are currently unbeaten. Spence, 33, is both WBO and IBF welterweight champion, having earned it by beating Danny Garcia unanimously in a 12-round unanimous decision in 2020. That performance marked his comeback after being sidelined due to a devastating car accident which rendered him temporarily disabled for 14 months, but since then has experienced exponential success as his title defense begins uncontestedly.
Crawford, 35, holds two world titles at lightweight and junior welterweight before undisputedly becoming the WBO welterweight champion in 2018.
Spence stands out as a more traditional power puncher; yet his short punches to both body and head are accurate and quick. Although lacking Crawford’s mobility, Spence makes up for it with an outstanding high guard and superior Ring IQ which help him dominate many of his opponents more effectively than most of them could.
Though Crawford rarely gets hit, he isn’t known to be an elite defender and can find himself out of position when throwing home run derby bombs. Still, his cautious nature allows him to make adjustments using both feet and torso movements to stay out of trouble.
This will be a very intriguing fight, with Spence’s accuracy, workrate, and defensive acumen pitted against Crawford’s speed and elusiveness in a contest that could go either way. The victor will earn bragging rights as the greatest welterweight of this age and a place in posterity as the inaugural unified welterweight champion for the contemporary boxing era. But because both boxers have a rematch option, this main event might only be the beginning of a long-running battle.
