Tim Tszyu will make his first defense this Saturday after becoming the full WBO super welterweight champ from interim status. The “Soul Taker” will compete against Brian Mendoza, another champion. Tszyu enters the fight hot off of 2 straight knockout victories over Tony Harrison and Carlos Ocampo. The 28-year-old expects to eventually arrange a bout with Jermell Charlo after beating Mendoza.
Tszyu possesses punching power, despite the fact that certain boxing spectators may be unsure of what he contributes to the junior middleweight level. It’s the kind of power that, once it connects, can instantly alter the dynamics of the conflict and give Tszyu the upper hand.
Tszyu has been on an incredible winning streak, winning three out of his four fights recently and even knocking out world-rated fighter Carlos Ocampo in his most recent match-up. Brian Mendoza has been steadily moving up the ranks, and while losing by unanimous decision over Jesus Ramos Jr. in 2021, he didn’t let that set him back from continuing to take on the toughest tasks. After defeating Benjamin Whitaker in March 2022, he later defeated Jeison Rosario, the former unified junior middleweight champion, earning him the opportunity to face Sebastian Fundora. His victory over Fundora in April of this year, which has received a ton of social media attention, gave him the chance to face Tszyu on Saturday.
At 29 years old, this American is a tough customer with an aggressive style who prides themselves on never being stopped themselves and believes he can hand Tszyu their first defeat.
Both fighters are durable and could go the distance, though Tszyu could use his technical advantage and reach advantage to get close and cause damage early in the bout.
