Predictions & Analysis: Davies vs Barroso 01-06-2024

Game Preview

Fight Preview

Due to postponed or canceled major boxing events, boxing fans have had little reason for excitement lately. One event that promises to catch everyone’s eye will be this Saturday’s Davies versus Barroso bout (part of Ortiz vs Lawson card in Las Vegas) where both fighters may create record purses.

Ohara “Two Tanks” Davies will make his United States debut and attempt to capture the WBA Interim super-lightweight title against Venezuelan Ismael Barroso in a 12-round contest at Virgin Hotels Theater in Las Vegas, USA. With an impressive 25-2 professional record, Davies boasts 18 of those victories via knock out. Meanwhile, Barroso boasts a 24-4-2 record featuring 22 knockout wins compared to Davies.

Davies comes into this fight as the favorite. The Brit holds distinct advantages in reach and height as well as power; furthermore, his left hook was used to knockout Lewis Ritson in their previous matchup; if it can find its mark against Barroso it will quickly end their fight.

However, it must be remembered that Davies versus Barroso will likely be an extremely close contest. Both are adept at stringing together combinations, boasting 49 wins between them with 40 knockouts between them. Davies may use a powerful left hook attack but Barroso has an effective jab which could prove difficult for Davies to defend against.

Barroso will look for an early victory to secure his reelection into consideration for a world title shot after losing controversially against Rolando Romero in 2023. At 40, the Venezuelan can still produce plenty of power with his left hand, hoping to catch Davies off guard by working the body early on.

This bout was originally set to occur in Houston a month ago, but it was rescheduled for January 6th in Las Vegas due to Ohara Davies’ inability to obtain a visa in time to compete within the country on the original date. The battle was called off shortly after Davies obtained his visa.
