Predictions & Analysis: Efe Ajagba vs Joe Goodall 11-04-2023

Game Preview

Fight Preview

Efe Ajagba (18-1, 13 KOs) will look to make an argument that he belongs in the wider field of title contenders when he faces Australian Joe Goodall (10-1-1, 9 KOs). These fighters first met as amateurs in Glasgow for 2014 Commonwealth Games semifinals – Goodall won by decision and Ajagba received a decision victory from Goodall himself.

The fight will mark the inaugural Top Rank boxing event at Tahoe Blue Event Center since its grand opening earlier this month, and Ajagba’s team are optimistic he can deliver a performance worthy of such an acclaimed venue.

Ajagba is an experienced power puncher, capable of ending any fight in one blow. Goodall takes a more measured approach to fighting and utilizes his counterpunching to assert his will on his opponents. Goodall also employs his unique style that often frustrates their opposition; Ajagba tends to overcommit in early rounds which Goodall looks to take advantage of.

Goodall prefers not speaking to the media prior to his fights and enjoys keeping to himself, while Ajagba thrives off making grandstand appearances and speaking to media members before each fight. While they have an amicable rivalry, Goodall believes their fight holds some destiny for him and vice versa.

Both fighters are eyeing major opportunities next year. Goodall hopes to secure his first title shot against Ajagba this Saturday night; Ajagba believes he can strike first and prove that he’s prepared for big fights by scoring an early knockout victory against Goodall’s hard-hitting Aussie opponent.

Ajagba can take confidence from his unblemished record in professional competition and will be supported by an experienced team, such as trainer Kevin Barry who has been Ajagba’s cornerman since 2009.

Goodall has to maintain that high guard early in the bout on Saturday evening while also keeping an eye out for counterpunching opportunities. Ajagba’s weakness is that he takes a while to raise his hands back and frequently keeps them low. Goodall will have the chance to attack Ajagba and attempt to stop him at that point since he could be injured if a combination of punches lands with enough force.
