Fight Preview
On November 4 at Casino Miami Jai-Alai, two of the world’s premier cruiserweights will enter the ring for a World Boxing Council Cruiserweight Title Fight between junior champion Ilunga Makabu and mandatory challenger Noel Mikaelian for WBC Cruiserweight supremacy.
Ilunga Makabu (29-3, 25 KO) holds the honor of twice holding WBC cruiserweight championship belts; however, his glory days were cut short when Badou Jack stopped him after 12 rounds in February. Although his loss left an unfortunate taste in his mouth, Ilunga won’t let this opportunity slip through his grasp.
Makabu will face Noel Gevor Mikaelyan (26-2, 14 KO), originally from Germany through Armenia and currently living in Florida. Mikaelian won his most recent fight versus Michal Cieslak by unanimous decision after fighting back from serious trouble late in the third round and ending up as the WBC #1 cruiserweight contender.
The winner of this highly anticipated fight will face off against the victor of Chris Eubank Jr and Liam Smith’s forthcoming rematch to unify their belts.
Ilunga Makabu understands what it means to “have and let go.” In December of 2021 he won his first title easily against Olanrewaju Durodola, before successfully defending it against Thabiso Mchunu with MD in March of 2022. Unfortunately in his second defense against Jack things turned sour when Jack dropped Ilunga with a heavy right in round 4 before applying pressure that eventually resulted in Ilunga being stopped in 12 rounds.
Mikaelian, making his professional debut with this fight, enjoys an edge in height and reach over Makabu; additionally, he’s one year younger.
This fight will be an intense test of skill and wits as both fighters come into the ring with equal experience levels and compete on equal terms to decide the outcome in an intense 12-round cruiserweight encounter.
With both fighters able to land devastating punches, we’re eager to witness this fight unfold on a night of great entertainment.
