Fight Preview
Jake Paul will return to the boxing ring for his first fight since defeating Nate Diaz by unanimous decision to face Andre August on March 9th. Though August may not have the same high profile opponent as Fury, whom Paul last lost, he’s far from being an easy opponent; with a 10-1 professional boxing record and just one loss against top fighter Eric Abraham in 2018 alone he holds up well against anyone.
Paul has taken care to avoid unnecessary risks as he climbs through his career and has found success by selecting opponents with whom he is familiar, thus increasing his fighting prowess but leaving him without an experienced cruiserweight champion to challenge him in 2023. It appears Paul’s team may have chosen such opponents specifically in order to help him return to winning ways and close out 2023 on a strong note.
Paul has noted in the lead-up to his bout that it should be one of the toughest fights of his career thus far. Given his size and physical prowess, this could prove challenging – yet to remain competitive against top cruiserweight talent, Paul must work on improving both his striking and stamina to compete effectively with them.
August is 35 years old and has only been professionally since 2013, managing to defeat one opponent with a winning record from his initial 10 bouts. In 2014 he fought to a draw against an unknown boxer before getting stopped by another fighter two outings later before making an unlikely comeback earlier this year to outpoint Brandon Martin. August certainly shows toughness but lacks the skill level necessary to compete with some of the top cruiserweights.
Paul will find his matchup against August an invaluable chance to showcase his power, which is one of his main assets. August’s aggressive style should allow Paul numerous opportunities to land knockout shots; however, August has struggled to stay consistent as a pro and may lack enough punching power to stop Paul.
