Preview & Analysis: Matias vs Ergashev 11-24-2023

Game Preview

Fight Preview

Subriel Matias defending his IBF light welterweight championship against mandatory challenger Shohjahon Ergashev; both combatants appear set for an intense fight.

Matias’ relentless pressure in the ring and his never-faltering engine have made him a formidable adversary for any opponent he faces. Hailing from Fajardo, Puerto Rico he employs an approach designed to hurt opponents with each punch delivered.

Matias has established himself as one of the top fighters in the 140-pound division despite only fighting 20 bouts. His only defeat came at close 10-round decision loss against Petros Ananyan in 2020; since then, however, he has scored four consecutive victories over Jeremias Nicolas Ponce, Malik Hawkins, Batyrzhan Jukembayev and including the rematch against Petros Ananyan to become undisputed champion at that weight class.

IBF ordered Matias to fight Ergashev, the number three contender in their rankings, as part of his mandatory defense. At first, the IBF planned for him to face former titleholder Sergey Lipinets but eventually switched his assignment up class and gave him Ergashev instead as a more challenging fighter.

Shohjahon Ergashev, hailing from Uzbekistan is an aggressive southpaw with plenty of power who is an ideal opponent for Matias. Matias’ style resembles Ergashev in that both are known for trading aggressively in the trenches while exerting tremendous smothering pressure.

Ergashev may not possess Matias’ accuracy in shots, but his vicious left hands are enough to cause havoc among his 23 opponents in this division. Ergashev rarely misses in these fights and will provide Matias with a formidable challenger from Uzbekistan that will test him from all angles.

If Matias can get past Ergashev, he’s likely to receive offers from some of the bigger names in his division who had previously avoided facing him, like Devin Haney or Teofimo Lopez. No matter the outcome, this battle between two men should be seen; expect fireworks galore all night long.
