Tim Tszyu (22 wins, 16 knockouts) will defend the interim WBO junior middleweight title against tough Mexican Carlos Ocampo (35-2, 23 KOs). This fight will take place on Saturday night from Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in Australia.
With a 9th round TKO over previous world champion Tony Harrison, Tszyu won the interim world title belt in March and hopes he can firmly establish himself as one of the top fighters worldwide. Australia’s boxer has settled comfortably into his role, and trainer Darren Fenech is already plotting Tszyu’s next move up the rankings.
Tszyu will look to deliver an outstanding performance in front of his home fans as he seeks to live up to the growing anticipation surrounding him. While Tszyu may face an opponent with more experience in Ocampo, he said he doesn’t care, believing he can outlast their Mexican adversary and win outright.
Ocampo has been involved with boxing for an extended period and was able to bounce back after suffering his only loss against Errol Spence Jr five years ago, in which Spence hit Ocampo with an exceptional left hook that caused excruciating body pain for 27-year-old Ocampo early in the fight.
Ocampo fought 4 bouts last year and defeated Omir Rodriguez and Vicente Martin Rodriguez in the initial round in between stopping Mikael Zewski in the 9th round. Due to this, he was given the opportunity to challenge Sebastian Fundora for the interim WBC super-welterweight title in October. Unfortunately, he was unsuccessful and lost the fight by decision. But shortly after that defeat, Carlos defeated Mauricio Gutierrez Castor in the 5th round in March.
Tszyu has spent countless hours perfecting his timing in the gym and feels that this is his greatest opportunity yet to demonstrate why he should be considered one of the leading contenders at his weight class.
