Preview & Picks: Carlos Adames vs Julian Williams 6/24/2023

Game Preview

Fight Preview

Carlos Adames and Julian Williams will fight not just for a boxing championship, but also to cement themselves as top middleweight contenders. When they meet this Saturday at The Armory in Minneapolis for their Premier Boxing Champions bout, the winner could get another shot at WBC champion Jermall Charlo.

Adames (22-1) has won four straight fights and recently claimed an interim championship when he knocked Juan Macias Montiel out in October 2022. Now looking to advance up the ranks and earn a full version of title shot against former undisputed champ Williams looking for redemption, Adames must continue winning to achieve success and keep pace with former unified champ’s comeback bid.

In a fight over the interim WBO junior middleweight championship in November 2019, Patrick Teixeira stunned Adames, giving him his only loss on the record. Since that surprise victory, he has racked up 4 straight victories, the last of which was his victory over Montiel for his secondary title.

Adames and Williams will compete in the Middleweight division for 12 rounds, and Adames is currently considered the favorite to prevail. However, Williams has proven himself an important upset threat and comes into this fight with more experience and victories than Adames does.

Both fighters employ an orthodox fighting style. Adames is four years younger and has 9 fewer professional fights on his record; making his professional debut 5 years and 2 months after Williams did. This leaves Adames vulnerable against takedown attempts early in this fight as his physicality may make for greater damage for Adames than Williams does.

Williams will bring many advantages to this fight, including smart pressure and excellent defense. His combination of power and agility will make life difficult for Adames in the ring; counterpunching may make matters even more complicated for the Philly fighter. With a win on Saturday, Philly could get closer to taking home the full version of WBC title; however it won’t be an easy road.
