On Monday June 26th at Truist Park in Minnesota, the Minnesota Twins and the Atlanta Braves will face each other for the first game of a three-game interleague series between them.
The Twins head into this game with a 40-39 record and are holding onto their two-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians for AL Central supremacy. Their pitching staff has been one of their major strengths this season, ranking second among MLB pitchers in terms of fWAR (3.66 ERA and 753 strikeouts). They are also joint 4th in most saves this season with 26.
However, Minnesota has struggled to match other teams on offense this season. Minnesota currently sits 27th in runs at 3.92 per game – only Kansas City, Detroit and Oakland have posted worse figures.
The Atlanta Braves enter this game boasting a 50-27 record and leading the National League. Atlanta has scored runs at an impressive rate thanks to one of baseball’s most potent lineups.
Ronald Acuna Jr. leads the club with a .328 average, 16 homers and 47 RBI. Matt Olson follows close behind with 60 RBI and 25 home runs this year.
But the Braves’ pitching has been one of their greatest weaknesses this season. Their pitching staff ranks 9th with an ERA of 3.85 and 17th in WHIP with 1.29; these issues will need to be addressed during their crucial three-game series against the Twins.
This game promises an intriguing battle of division leaders, as Sonny Gray of the Twins takes the mound against Spencer Strider of the Braves. Gray has been superb over his last seven starts for Minnesota with a 2.44 ERA and 1.28 WHIP over that span, while Strider has made three solid appearances since being called up early June; however, his walking right-handed batters more frequently than lefties has hindered him this year.
