On Monday June 26th, the Texas Rangers and the Detroit Tigers will open up a three-game series against one another. Following an uneven weekend at home where they lost two out of three games to the Minnesota Twins, Detroit will look to rebound against an upstart Rangers team that has won five of eight contests recently.
The Tigers will send lefty Matthew Boyd against Andrew Heaney, another southpaw, to face off. Heaney has enjoyed an outstanding season, posting a 3.98 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 76 strikeouts but having issues with walk rate and having below-average hard hit percentage figures.
Boyd has made 14 starts so far this year and is 5-5, involving 2 quality starts. Boyd has a 5.37 ERA after throwing 70.1 innings and allowing 68 hits. He has a 9.1 K/9 rate and a 1.32 WHIP. He has performed much better away from home, as he has a 4-0 record in 7 starts. On travels, he boasts a WHIP of 0.98, a lower ERA of just 3.44, and a higher K/9 rate of 10.8.
Heaney has held his own against some of the league’s hardest hitting teams with an 11.5 K/9 strikeout rate and 4.22 K/BB ratio, as well as one of the league’s best pitchers when it comes to limiting opponents’ long balls, having not allowed any home runs over his last seven starts.
In the struggling AL Central, the Tigers are currently 5 and a half games below the Twins and only one game in front of the White Sox. The Tigers lost their series versus Minnesota on Sunday after giving up a 3-2 advantage in the 8th inning and allowing 3 runs in the tenth. In the defeat, the Tigers’ offense managed only 6 hits and 14 strikeouts.
The Texas Rangers are currently in the leading spot in the AL West Division after cruising through the majority of the initial three months of their campaign. After a 3-3 road trip between Chicago and New York, the Rangers are back at home. During this trip, they won 2 of the 3 matches against the White Sox and dropped 2 of 3 matches versus the Yankees, including the last 2 contests of the series.
