Game Preview

MLB games are always entertaining – this Monday night at Citi Field in Flushing, Queens between the Milwaukee Brewers and the New York Mets may just be more so.

During a very poor campaign, New York has not been capable of performing to its potential. A number of their star players are underwhelming. After losing a pair of 3 road games versus the Phillies over the weekend, the team’s record in its last 10 matches falls to 4-6. They have yet to take a series this month. In the NL wildcard, they’re 8.5 games away from a playoff position.

The Mets boast an aggressive offense led by third baseman Pete Alonso, who leads his team with 24 homers and 55 RBIs. Brandon Nimmo is also playing very well for them, leading in batting average (.283), OBP (.374) and in hits (83).

On Monday night, Justin Verlander will start on the mound. Verlander had a respectable previous outing versus the Astros, giving up 4 runs over 7 innings and taking the loss. The ace has had a poor debut campaign with the Mets, going 2-4 in 52 innings while compiling an unimpressive 4.50 ERA and 1.21 WHIP.

On the other side of things, the Milwaukee Brewers will look to get back in contention in the National League Central. After splitting a three-game set against Cleveland Guardians over the weekend and entering this game with an 40-37 record just half-a-game behind first place Reds. Milwaukee is an exceptional road team this year and would hope to keep winning against the Mets at their home as well.

Milwaukee is in 25th place with an average run total of 4.05. The bullpen’s 4.09 collective ERA ranks them 13th overall.

Colin Rea will start the first game of the series for the Brewers. Rea’s last start versus the Diamondbacks resulted in a no-decision for the Brewers since he allowed 4 runs, which includes one homer, in 5.1 innings of work. The youthful right-hander has had an alright season, sporting a 3-4 record, a 4.87 ERA, and a 1.28 WHIP in 62.2 innings pitched.
