On Saturday, Mainz 05 will host Stuttgart at Mewa Arena looking for their first victory. Die Nullfunfer will be seeking to continue their strong start to the season and extend their unbeaten streak against the home team, which currently stands at six games.
Mainz’s struggles in the new Bundesliga season continued in their most recent match, a 4-0 loss against Werder Bremen before the international break. Marvin Ducksch, Jens Stage, Leonardo Bitencourt, and Justin Ninmah scored for the home team as Werder Bremen put on an impressive offensive performance at the Weserstadion and won the game 4-0.
With a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt on August 27 in between their two losses, Mainz have now won just one of their first three Bundesliga games. Bo Svensson’s squad has now gone eight league games without a win, losing six and drawing two since their 3-1 success over Bayern Munich on April 22. The latest of these defeats came against Werder Bremen on September 2.
A 2-0 victory over MSV Duisburg at the Stadion am Bruchweg last Saturday boosted Die Nullfunfer’s spirits heading into the international break. Mainz will attempt to continue their strong performance from their match against Duisburg, but they face a formidable opponent in a Bayern Munich team that is undefeated in their past six meetings with Mainz, having won four and drawn two since losing by 3-2 in January 2019.
Stuttgart, on the other hand, is off to a decent start in the 2023-24 Bundesliga season, as they are now third in the standings after winning two of their first three games. On August 19, Sebastian Hoeness’s team opened the season with a 5-0 win against Bochum in the league opener. A week later, on August 26, they were brought back down to earth with a 5-1 loss to RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena.
On September 2, though, Enzo Millot scored in the 75th minute to cap off a 5-0 rout of Freiburg behind two goals from Chris Fuhrich and two from Serhou Guirassy. Stuttgart, like its host, was in action on September 8 during the international break, defeating St. Gallen, Switzerland, 8-3 in the Mercedes-Benz Arena.
