On Saturday, Union Berlin will begin a monumental week against Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga at the Volkswagen Arena. Union faces another club with playoff hopes this season on Wednesday before traveling to Real Madrid.
Wolfsburg is determined to make a return to Europe after two consecutive failed attempts. They’re off to a good start since their affluent owners made smart acquisitions of talented players across the board.
They’ve set the bar high with two wins in their first two games, which is a significant improvement over last season, when it took them eight games to achieve six points. The early play of Danish striker Jonas Wind has been crucial, as he has scored two-goal games in each of their first two victories. Before the international break, the 24-year-old assisted on the opening goal for Hoffenheim, but Niko Kovac’s team still lost 3-1.
Wolfsburg is back on home soil after two consecutive road games, which is encouraging on paper but they must up their game here. Even though they started the season with a win over Heidenheim, Wolfsburg only won two of nine games at home in the second half of the season. Union Berlin is up next for Kovac’s revamped squad, followed by equally difficult tests against European competitors Borussia Dortmund and Freiburg.
The biggest task for Urs Fischer and Union Berlin will be to avoid letting the journey to Madrid derail their work at home. After a 2-0 start, Union, like Wolfsburg, suffered a defeat just before the international break.
Last time out, RB Leipzig gave Die Eisernen a taste of their own medicine by defeating them 3-0 at der Alten Foersterei after Mainz and Darmstadt had both been beaten 4-1 by a surging Union.
Both Wind and Kevin Behrens (who had a hat trick against Mainz and added another goal against Darmstadt) have scored four goals for Wolfsburg so far. Union maintained their strongest lineup, including Behrens, despite finishing in fourth place, and strengthened it further in preparation for their first Champions League campaign.
