On Saturday night, the Vonovia Ruhrstadion will host a Bundesliga match between VfL Bochum and Eintracht Frankfurt. The Europa Conference League group stage begins this week, and the visiting team will be hoping for no repeat of last season’s crushing loss.
It seems like another challenging season in the Bundesliga for Bochum, who barely avoided relegation last time around. Bochum were eliminated from the DFB-Pokal by third-tier Arminia Bielefeld after allowing 17 goals in seven preseason matches.
Another crushing blow would have been the opening game of the league season, a 5-0 loss at Stuttgart. However, if they can replicate last season’s success at the Ruhrstadion, when they suffered just four losses in 15 matches, they will have a much better chance of staying up.
A week after the disaster in Stuttgart, a draw with Borussia Dortmund here boosted morale, and Bochum showed great determination to come from behind twice at Augsburg to earn another draw before the break.
The next five games for Thomas Letsch’s team are extremely difficult, as they will play Frankfurt, European contenders Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, and Freiburg, and Borussia Monchengladbach.
Frankfurt’s transition from Oliver Glasner to new manager Dino Toppmoller has gotten off to a strong start. Toppmoller has yet to experience defeat despite inheriting a difficult situation at the club after replacing the guy who won the Europa League and the domestic cup.
The weekend finds Frankfurt in the middle of the table, but they are unbeaten after three league games for just the second time in 11 seasons. With Randal Kolo Muani, Jesper Lindstrom, Evan Ndicka, Daichi Kamada, and Djibril Sow all gone from last season’s roster, the new manager will have his hands full.
While Eintracht were juggling European commitments, they were rescued by a debut goal from one of their new signings, Niels Nkounkou, in the 87th minute of their last match against Koln. Frankfurt edged out Levski Sofia 1-0 in the last minutes of the home leg of their Europa Conference League playoff qualifying match.
On Thursday, Toppmoller and his squad will host Aberdeen at the Deutsche Bank Park to kick off their group stage campaign.
