Koln and Hoffenheim, two teams with different openings to the new Bundesliga season, will meet at the RheinEnergieStadion on Saturday. Die Kraichgauer are hoping to make it three consecutive league wins this weekend, while the home side is winless after three matches.
During the international break on September 6, FC Koln beat German amateur side Bergisch Gladbach 6-0 in a friendly match, which was a morale boost for the team. Seven different players scored in a lopsided match at the BELKAW-Arena: Steffen Tigges, Faride Alidou, Damion Downs, Joao Pinto, Meiko Waschenbach, and Julian Pauli.
When Koln return to action in the Bundesliga, where they have yet to win any of their initial three matches, manager Steffen Baumgart will be hoping that the outcome may serve as a springboard for a fantastic run of success. The season for Die GeiBbocke started off with two straight losses to Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg until they played to a 1-1 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt on September 3.
Koln will be trying to pick up where they left off in their previous meeting, but they have struggled to win on home soil recently, winning only one of their past eight league matches since late February.
Hoffenheim, meanwhile, kept their winning streak alive during the international break with a 3-1 comeback win over FC Luzern of Switzerland on September 7. After the visitors took the lead through Kamal Ademi in the 29th minute, Die Kraichgauer responded with three goals of their own, one each from Kevin Vogt, Mergim Berisha, and Fin Ole Becker.
In keeping with their stellar play in the Bundesliga, they defeated Heidenheim and Wolfsburg in quick succession. They opened the season with a 2-1 loss to Freiburg on August 19. Pellegrino Matarazzo’s squad improved to 4-0-0 overall with the win against Luzern, including a 4-1 first-round DFB Pokal triumph against Lubeck on August 14.
