The UEFA Champions League groups for the 2023–24 season have been set, and, as expected, Manchester City is the heavy favorite to win again. Man City won the UEFA Champions League for the first time last season, capping off an unprecedented “treble” of league and cup titles.
Some great teams’ chances were slightly diminished because of the groups they were placed in, and Group F appears to have the unenviable reputation as the “Group of Death,” with Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, and Newcastle all contending for the top two slots.
Manchester City
The confidence with which Man City dispatched its opponents in early 2023 must have struck fear in their hearts. The Citizens are justified favorites after the huge acquisition of former RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol and the occasional appearances of Erling Haaland as the finest player in the world.
They are undefeated through three games in the domestic league and it appears that no club can beat them on their day.
Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich lost to Man City in the quarterfinals of the Champions League in 2022–23. Despite Bayern’s 11th straight Bundesliga triumph, there has been instability at the top of the organization due to the dismissal of chief executive Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic within minutes after Bayern clinched the title.
The team fired manager Julian Nagelsmann earlier this year. The signing of Harry Kane has paid immediate dividends. Kane has contributed to three goals and one assist in two league games for the German team.
Real Madrid
Marco Asensio, Karim Benzema, Mariano Diaz, and Eden Hazard have all left Real Madrid this season, while Brahim Diaz, Fran Garcia, Joselu, and Jude Bellingham all joined or returned to the club.
