Game Preview

After the 2016 World Series victory by the Chicago Cubs, which ended a 108-year championship drought, the team’s fortunes began to decline. Cody Bellinger’s decline with the Los Angeles Dodgers wasn’t as steep, but he still wasn’t anywhere near his National League MVP form from 2019.

This season, the Cubs and Bellinger have worked well together to the benefit of both. Bellinger’s revival has helped the Cubs move up to second place in the National League wild-card chase. On Monday night in Denver, they’ll kick off a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies.

Infielder Jeimer Candelario departed the Cubs’ 5-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday with back discomfort and may not play again this season. He is listed as day-to-day by Chicago. In 2019, Bellinger hit .305 with 47 homers, 115 RBI, and a.305 batting average.

On Saturday, Bellinger stole a base, giving him at least 20 steals for the first time in his career in addition to his 20 home runs. The three-game losing streak was snapped thanks to his home run on Sunday, keeping the Cubs within striking distance of the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central. Three games separate the Cubs from the Brewers.

Jordan Wicks, who is set to make his MLB debut on April 2 against the Rockies, has also made a significant contribution. After being called up to the majors on August 26th, Wicks has proven to be a valuable member of the starting rotation.

Kris Bryant signed a seven-year contract with the Colorado Rockies in March of 2022, but his time with the team has been plagued by injuries. He only played in 42 games in 2022 and is only up to 65 so far this year.

Bryant has spent most of his time with Colorado in the outfield, but he may get some time at first base when he returns from a finger injury, maybe against his former team.

On Monday, a left-handed pitchers’ duel will take place between Chicago’s Jordan Wicks and Colorado’s Kyle Freeland. Despite having a rough season overall, he has won two of his last three decisions, including the Rockies’ lone victory on their recent six-game road trip that ended with a 6-3 loss to San Francisco on Sunday night.
