After blowing a lead on the road, the Milwaukee Brewers will start ace right-hander Brandon Woodruff against the Miami Marlins in the series opener on Monday night. Even though Woodruff’s team lost on Sunday, they still set a high bar for him to reach.
Corbin Burnes tossed eight scoreless innings, and the Brewers’ no-hitter lasted 10 and a third innings against New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole. Nonetheless, the Yankees prevailed, 4-3, after 13 innings. Woodruff must now right the ship for the Brewers. The Marlins will send out lefty Jesus Luzardo to face him.
After being placed on the disabled list for four months, Woodruff has made six starts and is 3-1 with a 2.78 ERA. In his most recent start, on Tuesday’s 7-3 victory over Pittsburgh, he surrendered just two hits over seven scoreless innings. Since the start of last season, he has made 29 starts, and in those starts he is 14-3 with a 2.36 ERA. In two career starts versus the Marlins, he is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA.
With three runs in the seventh inning and two more on a home run by Bryan De La Cruz in the eighth, Miami rallied to defeat Philadelphia, 5-4. Ranger Suarez, starting for the Phillies, held the Marlins hitless until the seventh inning, with one out.
Milwaukee has a three-game lead over Chicago in the NL Central as they start a seven-game homestand. For the second-to-last National League wild card spot, Miami trails Arizona by half a game. When the Brewers score four or more runs, they go 66-15, but when they only score three, they go 13-48.
Never having played Milwaukee before, Luzardo is 1-3 with a 4.89 ERA in his last seven starts. However, in his last three games, he has allowed only two earned runs across 18 innings pitched. Last Tuesday, he started and did not earn the decision in a 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. He surrendered two runs on four hits over six innings.
