The Tampa Bay Rays are keeping things simple at a time when their divisional rivals are paying close attention to the standings. Now leading the American League wild-card rankings, the Rays are only a game and a half back from the division-leading Baltimore Orioles.
The 75-68 Minnesota Twins now have an easier road ahead of them. As of right now, they are the best team in the AL Central. On Monday night in Minneapolis, the first of three games between these two teams that are expected to make the playoffs will be played.
On Monday, right-handers Sonny Gray and Tyler Glasnow will take the mound for Tampa Bay and San Francisco, respectively. Gray has been a consistent innings eater for the Twins, tossing six or more in eight of his last nine starts.
The Boston Red Sox were no match for Glasnow on Wednesday, when he struck out 14 batters over six innings and allowed only one earned run on three hits en route to a complete-game victory. In 99 2/3 innings pitched this season, Glasnow has fanned 134 batters.
Glasnow allowed one run over three innings of relief work in his lone career start against the Twins, but was still saddled with a no-decision. Tampa Bay is gaining on Baltimore in the American League East, while Minnesota has a comfortable lead in the Central.
The Twins had won three straight series before Sunday’s loss to the New York Mets, and they had won six of their previous nine games overall. Manager Rocco Baldelli is pleased with his team’s offensive output so far, as it has led to some fruitful innings for Minnesota.
The Twins’ offense has rediscovered its stride with right fielder Max Kepler’s return to full health and production. Kepler hit a game-winning three-run triple in the seventh inning on Saturday, leading Minnesota to an 8-4 victory over New York.
