On Saturday night, Rayo Vallecano will continue their 2023-24 La Liga season on the road against Real Betis, hoping to rebound from a devastating loss to Atletico Madrid. Real Betis enters this encounter on the heels of a 4-2 loss to Athletic Bilbao, while the visitors lost 7-0 to Atletico on Monday at home.
After getting off to a winning start in La Liga with a 2-1 win over Villarreal, Real Betis earned a point in a scoreless draw against Atletico in their next game. In their most recent match, Manuel Pellegrini’s squad trailed Athletic 4-2 after leading 2-0 after only 10 minutes at San Mames thanks to goals from Willian Jose and Isco.
Real Betis, who have four points after three games, are currently in ninth place in the league after Athletic scored four unanswered goals to secure all three points. After finishing in sixth place in La Liga last season, El Glorioso qualified for the Europa League group stage and will look to once again contend for a playoff spot in the Spanish league this year.
Meanwhile, Rayo has gotten off to a great start in the league, winning both of their opening games on the road (against Almeria and Granada) while keeping clean sheets in each. Atletico Madrid upset Francisco’s team on Monday night, scoring seven consecutive goals to earn their largest-ever away victory in Spain’s top flight.
Rayo captain Oscar Trejo remarked after the game that the team ‘had no words’ to describe what had transpired, and the capital club will be eager to put the bizarre result behind them this weekend. Since their promotion from the Segunda Division at the end of the 2020-21 season, Los Franjirrojos have finished 12th and 11th in Spain’s top flight, and they will be shooting for a similar position this season.
However, Rayo’s fans shouldn’t get too excited because their team hasn’t beaten Real Betis in La Liga since April 2014 and lost both meetings with the Seville club last season. The summer transfer window has been a busy one for Real Betis, with several new players joining the club and several significant ones leaving, like Sergio Canales and Joaquin.
