Sevilla is the away club, and after a terrible start to the season, this matchup might not have come at a worse moment. They face a demanding season ahead and, to make a run at the playoffs, they’ll need to strengthen across the board.
Count on the unexpected from Sevilla. You can expect to see them falter in La Liga while surprising everyone by winning major games and titles in Europe. Last year they excelled in Europe but struggled in La Liga, and those issues at home have carried over into this season. Sevilla has scored only five goals in its first three league games, while allowing eight. They’ve fallen to the league’s cellar, and some supporters are starting to freak out.
Sevilla had a terrible month in August, losing all three games they played. They started the month with a home loss to Valencia, then were crushed 4-3 away at Alaves, and finished the month losing 2-1 at home to Girona. The Champions League champions, Manchester City, defeated the Europa League champions, Sevilla, in the European Super Cup. Once again, this proves that Sevilla is a superior team outside of Spain than inside.
Despite Barcelona’s decline in performance, Atletico Madrid was unable to prevent them from retaining their title. The home team has big hopes for this season and has gotten off to a good start, racking up seven of a possible nine points. Atletico is now in second place, behind Real Madrid (who have a perfect 3-0 record) and Barcelona (who have a 2-2 record). If Madrid were to get another three points, it would put pressure on its local rivals.
In August, Atletico played three games and won twice and drew once. They started the season off with a 3-1 victory here over Granada, making easy work of what should have been a difficult matchup. After a scoreless draw with Real Betis on their season’s opening road trip, Madrid rebounded last weekend with a 7-0 thrashing of Rayo Vallecano. That was a good illustration of the team’s potential when performing at its best.
