Game Preview

When La Liga play resumes for Barcelona on the road at Mallorca on Tuesday night, they’ll be looking to make it seven wins in a row across all competitions. The Catalan side is atop the league table after racking up 16 points through six games, while Mallorca sits in last place with just five points over the same number of contests.

Mallorca are currently in last place (15th) in the La Liga league after a win, two draws, and three losses in their first six matches. After opening with a 1-1 draw against Las Palmas, the Pirates dropped their next two matches, to Villarreal and Granada, at the tail end of August.

During picking up their second point of the season against Athletic Bilbao at home at the beginning of September, Mallorca went on to overcome Celta Vigo 1-0 during the international break to increase their season total to five. On Saturday, Javier Aguirre’s squad faced off against Girona in a high-scoring matchup that ended 5-3 in favor of the Catalan club.

After taking the lead in the fourth minute on a goal by Vedat Muriqi, Mallorca dropped five goals without responding until late in the game, when Abdon Prats scored twice to make the scoreline more respectable.

Similarly, Barcelona’s 3-2 victory over Celta Vigo on Saturday was far from routine, but the Catalan club still came away with all three points.

Before the final 10 minutes began, Celta held a 2-0 lead. However, Robert Lewandowski scored twice to tie the game in the 85th minute, and Joao Cancelo scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute. With this triumph, the Catalan team now has 16 points and is currently in first place.

After a lackluster performance in the season opener against Getafe, Barcelona has won their next six games, including 5-0 over Royal Antwerp in the Champions League and league victories over Cadiz, Villarreal, Osasuna, Real Betis, and Celta. Xavi’s squad still has two league games left against Mallorca and Sevilla before their trip to Porto for their second group stage encounter at the beginning of October.
