On Wednesday in the La Liga, Athletic Bilbao will host Getafe at San Mames, hoping to extend their unbeaten streak to six games. Meanwhile, the visitors hit the road in search of their first away points of the 2023-24 campaign.
Athletic Bilbao have responded well to opening the season with a 2-0 home loss to Real Madrid by going on a five-game unbeaten run. Ernesto Valverde’s squad won two straight games against Osasuna and Real Betis before playing to a scoreless draw against Getafe.
A 3-0 thrashing of Cadiz got them back on track, and then goals from Inaki Williams and Oihan Sancet gave Los Leones a 2-0 road victory over fellow Basque club Alaves.
Athletic Club are in fourth place heading into Wednesday’s game after winning their last two games by a combined score of 3-0. Los Leones are anxious to enter Saturday’s Basque derby with Real Sociedad on the back of three consecutive victories. However, the team’s previous four encounters with Getafe have ended in draws, so this may be easier said than done.
The visitors’ record through six games this season is two wins, one draw, and three losses. A goalless draw against Barcelona and victories against Alaves and Osasuna have resulted in all seven of their points this season.
Even though Jose Bordalas’s squad has won all seven of their home games, they have lost all three of their road games, to Girona, Real Madrid, and Real Sociedad.
The Azulones were in a good position to beat Real Sociedad on Saturday after Carles Alena equalized Take Kubo’s early goal and Borja Mayoral converted a penalty kick to put his team up 2-1 before halftime at the Reale Arena.
Getafe led 2-0 at halftime, but their opponents rallied in the second half to win 4-3 thanks to goals from Mikel Oyarzabal (2) and Brais Mendez. Despite Juanmi Latasa’s late equalizer, Getafe dropped to 13th place in the standings.
