Game Preview

On Friday night, the Chicago White Sox travel to Boston to take on the Red Sox in the opener of a three-game series. Both teams have been on a downward spiral recently.

Six of the last seven games and 12 of the last 15 have been losses for the Red Sox. For the first time since the second week of the season, they find themselves in last place in the American League East and three games under .500. With nine losses in their last 12, the White Sox have fallen to 37 games below .500 for the first time since 2018.

Boston’s Rafael Devers made its 100th error of the season in the fifth inning on Wednesday. After beating out an infield single for the Red Sox in the seventh inning, second baseman Luis Urias left the game with calf pain.

The White Sox lost on the road for the 28th time this season after giving up 14 hits. Six out of the eight times the Nationals had an offensive opportunity, they were successful.

On Friday, against his former team, Boston will send lefty Chris Sale to the mound. Touki Toussaint, a right-hander, is expected to start for Chicago.

In his career versus the Red Sox, Toussaint has a record of 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA. In 2018, while playing for the Atlanta Braves, he made his lone career start against the Boston Red Sox. On Saturday, the team that Toussaint was pitching for, the New York Mets, beat the Minnesota Twins 7-6.

In 2016, the White Sox transferred Sale to the Red Sox for Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech, Luis Alexander Basabe, and Victor Diaz after he had played for them for six seasons. In four career starts versus his previous club, he is 2-1 with a 3.96 ERA. During those four starts, he struck out 39 batters in just 25 innings of work.

The Red Sox lost 4-3 to the Toronto Blue Jays on Sale’s previous start, which he did not receive the decision for. In six and a half innings, he struck out ten batters while allowing one run on two hits and two walks. In seven of his last 11 outings, Sale has allowed two runs or less.
