Game Preview

Brandon Crawford hopes to suit up for at least one of the next six meetings between the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers, starting this Friday in Los Angeles.

Before Thursday’s first game of the four-game series, the Giants shortstop was placed on the 10-day injured list with a hamstring injury. Due to his transfer to the IL, Crawford will not be able to return to the lineup until the season finale on October 1 in San Francisco against the Dodgers. After 13 seasons, Crawford may be playing his last game in a Giants uniform tonight.

The Giants dropped game one of the series 7-2 without Crawford and are now three games out of the National League wild-card place. Six of San Francisco’s last seven games have ended in defeat.

On Friday, the Giants will start lefty Sean Manaea. On Sunday, Manaea will face the Colorado Rockies in his third start since returning to the rotation. He allowed three runs across five and a third innings in a win. He has never beaten the Dodgers in his career, going 0-5 with a 9.00 ERA in 35 innings pitched against them.

On Friday, the Dodgers will employ a different strategy, sending different pitchers to the mound at different times, which is something they said they would also do in the playoffs. Caleb Ferguson will start, while Ryan Yarbrough will pitch in relief.

Bobby Miller, Lance Lynn, and Clayton Kershaw are the only three certain starters for Los Angeles in the postseason. Lynn and Kershaw, both veterans, may be limited to moderate pitch counts, with the bullpen shouldering the bulk of the workload on those days.

As many as three innings per outing could be demanded of pitchers like Yarbrough, Emmet Sheehan, and Ryan Pepiot.

If the Dodgers’ offense can produce, the strategy becomes less unsettling. At the top of the Atlanta Braves’ lineup, both Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman are performing at an MVP level. Since returning from a groin injury, J.D. Martinez has gone on a home run binge, with his most recent bomb going over the fence on Thursday.
