This Saturday night at UFC Vegas 79, Charles Jourdain and Ricardo Ramos will square off. The 27-year-old Jourdain is an odd commodity in the UFC. On the one hand, he’s a highly skilled kickboxer who likes to pick battles that everyone will enjoy. However, his record of 5-5 is cause for alarm. Ramos comes into the main event riding a two-fight win run and a 7-3 record in the championship division.
In the ring, Jourdain believes he is more capable than his record indicates. However, the reality is that Jourdain either does extremely well or very poorly in his fights, and he rarely has any control over which it will be. When his opponent is willing to stand and trade with the Canadian, Jourdain’s spectacular and fan-pleasing wins are propelled by his powerful kicks and snipers for fists.
He has incredible speed, a powerful landing, the mobility to launch unique strikes, and the fortitude to take whatever the fight throws at him. When his opponent, however, attempts to use wrestling or a clinch against the cage, Jourdain has trouble. While his submission game is surprisingly strong, he has trouble getting up from the ground after being taken down.
On the other side of the cage, Ramos is a super-athletic all-around fighter who can win fights everywhere. But sometimes he is his own worst adversary within the cage, opting for the road of most resistance rather than the path of least. Ramos is a deadly striker who can quickly change directions and land a whirling blow.
While entertaining to watch, Ramos’ huge moves are vulnerable to smart footwork, well-timed counterattack, and fundamental attacks, giving his opponents a positive striking differential. Ramos’ wrestling ability is his trump card and strongest quality.
Ramos’s wrestling is dynamic and founded in his innate agility, just as his striking. He has a knack for timing his shots such that they land right after his own offensive striking barrage, forcing his opponent to retreat.
