Game Preview

The Rays and Cardinals have split the opening two games, making this third game a very exciting one to watch. Zach Eflin pitched seven strong innings in game one for the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing just one run. The Rays scored four runs in the eighth inning to take a 4-2 lead, thanks in large part to a solo home run by Isaac Paredes off of Miles Mikolas.

Paul Goldschmidt and the Cardinals bounced back in game two. A two-run homer by Jose Siri had put the opposition up 2-1, but an RBI single by Nolan Arendao in the third leveled the game. Goldschmidt drove in two more runs for the Cardinals in the fourth inning, increasing their lead to 5-2. In the fourth inning, Siri hit his second home run of the game, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 6-4 Cardinals triumph.

The St. Louis Cardinals have scored six or more runs three times in the last eight games. They went 3-0 during their six-run scoring streak, however, when not, they are 0-5. In addition to ranking 12th in the majors in runs scored this season, the offense ranks 7th in batting average, 8th in slugging percentage, and 6th in on-base percentage.

The Cardinals have struggled this season due to poor pitching. They have a team ERA of 22nd in the majors, along with a WHIP of 27th and an opponents’ batting average of 29th. When it comes to quality starts, the Cardinals rank 22nd. Today, Matthew Liberatore will take the mound for the Cardinals. His season ERA stands at 6.93, and his record at 1-5.

The Cardinals’ pitching has been bad this year. but the Rays’ has been reliable. As a team, their ERA ranks sixth in the league, while their WHIP ranks second and their opponents’ batting average is highest. They still need to figure out how to keep their pitching rolling despite the loss of several key pitchers to injury.

Zack Littell’s job of keeping everything together begins now. This year, he has made four starts while being used largely as a relief. He has a 2-1 record in those outings while allowing only 3 runs in 16.1 innings pitched.
