On Wednesday night, the Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates play game three of a four-game series. In both games of this series, the Braves’ hitting has been outstanding. Two players in the series have four hits each: Michael Harris II and Orlando Arcia. Arcia now has two homers, joining the ranks of Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuna Jr.
The starting pitchers have been the primary reason for Atlanta’s poor ERA through two games. Twelve of the Braves’ thirteen earned runs have been allowed by starters. In 9 1/3 innings of relief work, the Atlanta bullpen has struck out 11 batters while allowing only 1 earned run on 6 hits.
In his most recent start, Max Fried faced the Chicago Cubs. To all appearances, he had never been hurt. He pitched six scoreless innings while striking out eight and allowing only three hits. Fried, who is among the top pitchers in baseball, has a favorable matchup against the Pirates. He should be able to shut down Pittsburgh because they are not a good team at the bat.
The Braves have one of the best hitting records in baseball. The Braves offense should function normally even without Acuña. So far in his first professional season, Quinn Priester has not fared well on the mound. Priester has an 8.69 ERA after allowing five home runs, 21 hits, striking out only 16 batters while walking 14.
The Pirates’ OPS in this series is.916, and they are hitting.269. The Pirates’ five home runs in this series have come from as many different players. Llover Peguero leads the Pirates with three hits. Of the 13 Pirates hitters who have taken the field thus far in this series, 12 have collected at least one hit.
The Pirates need to start hitting the ball if they want to win or at least cover the spread. The Pittsburgh offense will need to make up for the runs that Quinn Priester will undoubtedly allow. The Pirates have more success when facing left-handed pitchers, notwithstanding Fried’s greatness as a pitcher.
