Game Preview

Wednesday night marks the second game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Tampa Bay Rays of their three-game series. The first game of this series was a nail-biter that the Rays narrowly won. Even though they only won by a score of 4-2, Tampa Bay outhit St. Louis 12-5. Yandy Diaz led the team with four hits. The other Rays player with multiple hits was Randy Arozarena. The Rays had eight different players contribute with a hit.

Isaac Paredes hit their lone home run. With his dominant performance at Tropicana Field continuing, Zach Eflin was given the no-decision. Eflin threw seven innings, surrendered one run on four hits, and struck out eight batters. Pete Fairbanks allowed a home run in the ninth inning, but he still recorded his 15th save of the year.

The Cardinals are sending Dakota Hudson to try to turn things around. He performed reasonably well in relief but is yet to show his worth as a starter. But he just had a great outing against the Minnesota Twins. In seven innings of work, he gave up just three runs on two hits while fanning seven batters.

The Rays frequently start games with Jalen Beeks on the mound. Consequently, he must hold the Cardinals scoreless through at least the first two innings before giving way to the lengthy relief guy. Beeks’s seven opening performances have all been successful. Opponents are hitting .189 off him and he’s struck out 15 in only 14 innings pitched.

Without Yonny Chirinos, the Rays don’t have a clear answer at quarterback. The person in question must, however, last at least four or five innings. Because of the Cardinals’ offensive struggles, whoever they bring in will have a favorable matchup, but they’ll still need to perform well. The Rays might be able to win if the long relief pitcher limits the Cardinals to two or fewer runs.
