Arizona Diamondbacks vs Washington Nationals: Odds & Picks 4/21/2022

April 21, 2022

The Diamondbacks will be looking to not only replicate yesterday’s performance against the Nationals where they shutdown Washington 11-2 but also finish the series against the visiting team with a second win in a row, splitting the series down the middle at two wins for each. Starting for the D-backs will be former Cubs RHP Zach Davies, who will be looking for his first win of the year after losing against the Mets and starting in a losing effort and a no decision in a loss against the Padres, both earlier in the month. For the Nationals LHP Josh Rogers will be taking the mound looking to secure his second win of the season as well as the series win for Washington.

Game Preview

If there is one valuable lesson that applies to life but especially to baseball it’s that while something might not be working correctly one day, it can start working incredibly by the next day. If you’re not sold on the idea just look at how Arizona’s offense went from being the least dangerous unit in MLB when it comes to runs scored, batting average and slugging percentage to a team that went to town on the Nationals and managed to score 11 runs in a clearly dominant win last night. To put it in perspective, we’re talking about a team that was barely managing to put runs up on the board, so if there is one thing that’s very clear here, it’s that Arizona needs their offense to play like they did yesterday but every other day as well.

For the Nationals it’s very clear that if they wish to slide away from the competition for the second spot in the NL East, one that they are tied for with Atlanta right now, they need to show a better side of baseball that what fans were treated to last night. Just to put things in perspective, we’re talking about a team who by the end of the 5th inning was already trailing 11-0. Sure, slip ups happen all the time in baseball, but there’s a difference between a small slip and being taken down with 11 unanswered runs by the midway mark of a game, especially against a team who had the worst rated offense until yesterday.

Still, the Nationals have enough fire power in players like Josh Bell, Nelson Cruz and Juan Soto amongst others to turn this ship around and try to go for their 7th win of the season tonight. Between a strong outing from Rogers on the mound and some much-needed help from the offense, the Nats could be looking to score yet another important win on the road.
