St. Louis Cardinals vs Miami Marlins: Predictions & Picks 4/21/2022

April 21, 2022

After securing the first two wins of their three-game series on the road in Miami against the Marlins, the St. Louis Cardinals will be looking to complete the sweep today as they send RHP Jordan Hicks for his first start of the season. This is a start that many Cardinals fans have been expecting, especially given what Hicks had shown in the past when he was torching batters while coming out of the Cardinals bullpen for relief duties.

On the other side of the ball, the Marlins, who haven’t yet shown their best face so far will be sending RHP Pablo Lopez who will be looking to not only score his second win of the season but also help his team avoid a sweep at home against St. Louis.

Game Preview

As we head into the third game of the series between the Marlins and Cardinals St. Louis has shown a clear sight of dominance over Miami with 7 runs scored against just one from their opponents. With a 5-1 win in the first game and a hard fought 2-0 win yesterday after a Norlan Arenado two-run homer in the 9th secured the Cardinals their 7th win of the season, it is becoming more and more clear that the Cardinals are not playing around when it comes to showing the National League that nobody should ever sleep on their team. What has become clearer than ever is that the addition of Arenado can easily be perceived as one of the best off-season moves that the Cards have done in some time.

Most importantly tonight though is the debut of Jordan Hicks as a starter for St. Louis. Baseball fans will probably remember Hicks’ plethora of pitching talents, but most importantly how strong he can pitch, with record-setting fastballs of 105.1 and 104.3 mph. Now, with a chance to truly show his skill set that includes a scorching fastball and a slider that can fool anybody, a win by Hicks would really come in as a positive for a team but most importantly for him as he builds up his new persona in St. Louis’ starting rotation.

The Miami Marlins on the other hand will be looking to replicate the pitching and defensive efforts put on yesterday by starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara and the team as they were able to hold St. Louis down to 8 scoreless innings. Now with Pablo Lopez, manager Don Mattingly is hoping that a win to avoid the sweep will be the result of the efforts shown throughout the series, growing stronger as a team between the first two games. The only thing Miami needs is for their offense to start playing with as much energy as the defense and better results will come along.
