Game Preview

The Atlanta Braves arrive at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati to start off their three-game series against the Reds. The Braves come off after a recent 14-4 loss against the Philadelphia Phillies that otherwise would have given them the clean sweep. They are only 3 games behind the New York Mets in the National League East. Atlanta is ranked #4 in OPS (.751), and Matt Olson, Austin Riley and Dansby Swanson have racked more than 40 RBIs this season.

On the other side, the Cincinnati Reds didn’t have a good time against their last opponents the Chicago Cubs. They allowed 23 combined runs throughout their last two games, though they were able to pick up the first game of the series in a 5-3 manner. Even if the Reds have the worst record in this matchup (26-49 vs the Braves 44-33), they have a lot of room to cause an upset as the Braves’ starting pitcher had a really bad start against the Reds the first time they met.

Max Fried is the one opening things up for the Atlanta Braves, making his 16th start of the season. He holds a shiny 7-2 record with a 2.77 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP over 94.1 innings pitched. Fried was last seen on the mound on Saturday, when he allowed 2 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk across 6.2 frames. He struck out 9 of the Los Angeles Dodgers batters.

The Cincinnati Reds will send out Mike Minor as their starting pitcher, who is just making his 6th start of the season. The 34-year-old lefty made his season debut on June 3, and throughout 5 starts, he’s been struggling quite a bit. He carries a 1-4 record with a 7.71 ERA and 1.60 WHIP over 25.2 innings pitched. The pitching matchup is looking rough on the Reds’ side, but we have to consider Fried’s last performance against the Reds.
