Miami Marlins vs Arizona Diamondbacks: Preview & Odds 5/09/2022

May 9, 2022

If we were to take a really short stroll down MLB memory lane this season we would see that the Arizona Diamondbacks swept a three-game series against the Miami Marlins just last week. Now, as they start a new three-game series today but this time in Diamondbacks territory, the sun is clearly shining brighter for Arizona, while the Marlins really look like a fish out of water. While the D-backs will be looking to try and get a winning streak going after dispatching the Rockies in their last game, for the Marlins finding a way back to any sort of winning reality is definitely what they are after right now, so a win today is of the utmost importance.

Game Preview

In a division as tough as the NL West, where every team competing first of all has a record above .500 and secondly, all look like they are ready to pounce on each other’s slip ups, the Arizona Diamondbacks have been putting on quite a valiant fight. After having won five of their last six games, including the previously mentioned 3-game sweep of the Marlins early last week, and taking two out of three games against divisional rivals Colorado this weekend, Arizona is looking better and better as the season progresses and the idea of not just winning today’s game against Miami, but taking the whole series is definitely something that is very much at reach for the Diamondbacks right now.

Between the fact that CF Daulton Varsho has been doing on offense, truly showing that he can easily be the front-runner to become Arizona’s franchise player for the foreseeable future and Arizona’s pitching staff, both the starters and the bullpen, this team looks like the perfect sleeper candidate to take over at any time if they play their best baseball. Today, to try and start securing a win from the mound the Diamondbacks will be sending RHP Humberto Castellanos, who will be more than poised to score his third win of the season all while lifting his team to another win to start the week off right.

It’s hard to understand what’s more puzzling for the Miami Marlins right now. On the one hand they are going through a rather horrendous rut where they’ve lost seven of their last eight games. But yet they’re still hanging on tight in the 3rd place of the NL East division.

So, which is it with Miami? Are they a good team with bad luck, or a bad team in a division with an overachieving team, the Mets, a decent to good squad, Atlanta, and two teams who don’t look like they’re interested in trying to get something going, Philadelphia and Washington.

The team continues to look as a strong unit on both sides of the game, offensively and defensively, so why can’t they win? For today it will be on RHP Elieser Hernandez to try and pitch a solid few innings to try and stop Arizona in their tracks and start trying to turn Miami’s reality around, but again, the Marlins just look like a fish out of water, so it would be wise not to expect much from Miami.
