Today the Minnesota Twins kick off a very important three-game series against the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park. The Twins are battling it out with the Guardians and White Sox for first place in the American League Central Division while the Astros sit atop the AL West Division with the best record in the league, making them the favorite team heading into this encounter.
Houston is riding high in the American League with the best record, though they are coming off a tough weekend series with the Atlanta Braves in a rematch of the 2021 World Series. Houston dropped the first two games of the series before coming back on Sunday to take a 5-4 win over the Braves. Houston did receive a scare in the series as Yordan Alvarez, an AL MVP candidate, had to leave Friday night’s game with shortness of breath.
On the other hand, the Twins can’t seem to put together a solid run of baseball since relinquishing their season-long lead in the division. After winning four-straight games, the Twins have now lost three-straight games and find themselves two games behind the Guardians in the division standings. The Twins looked to be in good shape after defeating the lowly Texas Rangers in game one of their four-game set in Minnesota over the weekend.
Minnesota is sending Aaron Sanchez to the mound, who was acquired in a deadline deal with the Nationals in order to give the Twins more depth in the rotation. He is carrying a 3-3 record with a 7.68 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP over 36.1 innings pitched while striking out 24. Houston replies back with ace Justin Verlander, who is making his 23rd start of the split. Verlander holds a shiny 15-3 record with a 1.95 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP over 143 innings pitched while striking out 138.
